P2210101 - Measuring the Velocity of Light

Logo Phywe

P2210101

Function and Applications

This complete system enables the measurement of the velocity of light in air, as well as in transparent media such as liquids and solids. It is ideally suited for laboratory experiments, demonstrations, and educational purposes in optics.

Principle of Operation

The light intensity is modulated, and the phase relationship between the transmitted and received signals is analyzed. The velocity of light is calculated based on the relationship between phase variation and the optical path length.

Benefits

  • Measure the speed of light yourself
  • Analyze how light velocity varies across different materials
  • Compact setup suitable for tabletop use
  • Combined light speed and distance measurement in one device
  • Advanced digital measurement technology for high accuracy
  • Simple design with minimal adjustment requirements
  • Up to 2% accuracy using phase comparison of a high-frequency modulated laser
  • Can be used with or without an oscilloscope
  • Integrated display of all relevant parameters (ƒ, Δφ, Δt, Δx)

Experimental Tasks

  • Determine the velocity of light in air
  • Measure the velocity of light in water and synthetic resin
  • Calculate the refractive indices of different media
